About Our Range

In the late 1990s the existing range in the Kern River Valley was operated by the local Lions Club. Several years later the Kern River Valley Gun Association was organized and received a ten year special use permit to operate the shooting range on the Greenhorn Ranger District, Sequoia National Forest. The range is operated on a non-discriminatory basis exclusively for social purposes for the encouragement of organized rifle, pistol, and shotgun shooting among the residents and visitors of the Kern River Valley, with a view towards a better knowledge on the part of such citizens of the safe handling and proper care of firearms, as well as improved marksmanship. The existence of the range limits the damage done by persons shooting in unsupervised forest areas, and the litter left behind. The range is open to all youth groups providing them with a safe environment to practice and improve on newly learned skills.

The range is located 3.5 miles south of Kernville, on Cyrus Canyon Road Click Here For Map. The range also has an archery range, KRVGA members participate in regularly scheduled events, including cowboy single action meets. The shooting areas are covered and there is ample parking space for trailers and motor homes. Our NRA Certified Range Safety Officers on site insure all range rules are obeyed to provide a safe shooting environment. For those traveling to visit the range, LADS GUN SCHOOL has NRA certified instructors and is able to provide a variety of weapons to be used by guests for a fee.

The range is open to club members seven days a week, sun up to sun down. The range is open to the public on Sundays from 8 am to 1 pm, for a fee of $5.00 per person 18 years and over. There is no charge for children under 18 years of age, but they must be under the supervision of an adult at all times. The range at times is closed for regular scheduled competition events. The trap range is open to the public on Wednesdays and Sundays from 8 am until noon. Special events for youth groups can be arranged through our club secretary, and the range areas can be reserved for those events.
